The VMware Cloud Director alternative for service providers

If your multi-tenant cloud runs on Cloud Director and the VMware partner terms behind it have changed, edgeContinuum is the self-service layer you license and run yourself: organizations, quotas and a catalog of managed Kubernetes, PostgreSQL and VMs on the OpenStack you operate.

What changed for VMware cloud providers

Broadcom has moved its VMware Cloud Service Provider program to an invite-only model, and partners outside it were told their contracts would not be renewed after 26 January 2026 (The Register). Cloud Director Service, the hosted edition, is no longer sold or renewed (Broadcom). For a provider whose tenant portal, organizations and catalogs all live in Cloud Director, the question is bigger than which hypervisor comes next: where tenants sign in, how their organizations and quotas carry over, and what you sell on top. edgeContinuum answers that layer. It manages the OpenStack underneath and delivers managed Kubernetes, managed PostgreSQL, VMs and an app marketplace as products in a catalog you curate, with the tenancy and per-tenant usage a provider needs.

How Cloud Director maps across

Provider VDCs and vCenter resources
Platform regions and availability zonesSeveral infrastructures, from data centers to edge sites, connected and shaped into one platform topology.
Organizations and org VDCs
Organizations, projects, roles and quotasStructural isolation enforced by platform IAM, with usage tracked per organization and project for accounting.
Kubernetes and data services extensions
A managed services catalogClusters with autoscaling and in-place upgrades, PostgreSQL with high availability, VMs with networks and firewall rules.
Catalogs and vApp templates
App marketplace with private templatesHelm charts, containers and your own internal applications published as one-click products, rolled out across regions and cluster fleets.
Edge gateways and org networks
Networks, routers and firewall rulesPer-project networking tenants manage themselves, kept reconciled from declared desired state like everything else on the platform.
For providers

Sell it as a service

If you run infrastructure for clients, the catalog is the product. Each client is an isolated organization with its own projects, users, roles and quotas; the platform tracks their usage and quota consumption, ready to feed your own pricing and accounting; and you decide which services appear in their catalog.

Fewer moving parts to babysit

The platform runs as Kubernetes-native microservices and drives your infrastructure from declared desired state, so cluster upgrades, node pool scaling, failed-node replacement and database lifecycle are handled by the system. Regions stay autonomous: a site that loses its link keeps working locally and resyncs when connectivity returns.

Automated upgradesSelf-healingAutonomous regionsOne API

Cluster lifecycle

Upgrades in place, autoscaling pools, failed nodes replaced.

Database lifecycle

Provisioning, high availability and storage sizing handled.

Disconnection tolerant

Sites keep running under link loss, then resync.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to replace vSphere as well?
Yes, today the platform runs on OpenStack, so workloads move to an OpenStack you run on your own hardware. edgeContinuum manages that layer: your team and your tenants consume services rather than operating the plumbing.
What happens to tenant VMs and vApps?
VM images import into OpenStack with standard tooling and become catalog entries; instances are re-created as platform-managed VMs with their networks, routers and firewall rules. Kubernetes workloads are redeployed onto new managed clusters. Our engineers work the plan with you, tenant by tenant.
Do tenants keep self-service?
Yes. Each tenant is an organization with its own projects, users, roles and quotas, and provisions clusters, databases, VMs and apps from the catalog through the console, the API or Terraform.
How do we bill our tenants?
The platform tracks usage and quota consumption per organization and project, and you export those numbers into your own billing and pricing model.
How is it priced?
A subscription per managed resource, not per core or socket, so consolidating onto denser hosts lowers your cost instead of raising it.
